The Blue Lamp Trust has been a leading provider of assessments for Taxi licence applicants and existing Taxi drivers since 2011. As a not-for-profit organisation, all our proceeds go towards our Bobby Scheme which provides free home safety and security to elderly and vulnerable people to restore peace of mind.

Taxi Assessment Structure

The assessment lasts 1 hour consisting of a driving licence and eyesight check, a 45 minute driving assessment across a variety of road types and a debrief. Each candidate will be asked 2 ‘show me / tell me’ questions.  During the assessment drive they will be asked to perform 2 reversing manoeuvres, possibly an emergency stop and to drive independently of direction for a 10 minute period following road signs and directions to a particular destination.

A high level of driving competence is required.  To pass you must have no serious or dangerous driving faults and no more than 9 driving faults.

Successful candidates will be issued with a copy of their marking sheet and certificate.

Refer to video on this page for more information.

We deliver taxi driver assessments nationwide.

All bookings should be made online using the link here. For enquiries call the office on 0300 777 0157, Monday to Friday 09:30 – 15:00.

Please Note: Once a date and time for your assessment has been agreed between you and your assessor, you may cancel or change the appointment date by contacting the Blue Lamp Trust on 0300 777 0157 up to 5 clear working days prior to the test without incurring costs.

Your 5 clear working day cancellation period cannot include weekends, bank holidays, the day of your assessment or the day you give us notice.  For example, if you have a test booked for a Thursday you need to advise us by the previous Wednesday.

Changes made within 5 clear working days will not qualify for a refund and re-booking will attract the full fee.

Short Notice Booking – If you agree an assessment date with the assessor that is within 5 clear working days or less changes cannot be made to the booking and refunds will not be given.

Preparing for your Assessment

You may have several years of driving experience however we all pick up bad habits over time.  Therefore we strongly recommend that you take a driving lesson with an approved driving instructor (ADI) before taking your assessment.

The Blue Lamp Trust does not offer on road training in preparation for your assessment as this would be conflict of interest.

Our quick eLearning modules may be a useful way of refreshing your knowledge.

“I am really pleased with the service provided by The Blue Lamp Trust including your very prompt briefings and updates and of the examiner Mr Michael Bolton. The booking process was very straightforward and very quick. Mr Bolton contacted me very quickly and arranged a date very soon after the booking.
