Arthur, 89, wanted reassurance that he was doing the right things to stay safe online. After a Safe Online visit from the Blue Lamp Trust, he came away with practical advice, a better understanding of online risks, and greater confidence using technology.

For many people, keeping up with the online world can feel increasingly challenging – especially as scams become more sophisticated.
At the Blue Lamp Trust, our Safe Online service provides practical, friendly support to help people stay safe and confident when using the internet.
Understanding the risks of online scams
Older people are often more likely to be targeted by scams, as criminals may perceive them as more trusting or less familiar with technology. At the same time, fraud is one of the most common crimes in the UK, with the Office for National Statistics reporting that it accounts for a significant proportion of crime experienced by adults in England and Wales.
Many scams are now delivered digitally, through emails, text messages, or fake websites designed to look like trusted organisations such as banks, delivery companies, or government services.
A few years ago, Arthur experienced this first-hand when he was the victim of a scam that resulted in a loss of £4,000. Since then, he had become increasingly cautious – but also unsure about how exposed he might still be.
“I try to keep up with modern technology and the online digital world, but it is a struggle… I feel increasingly under threat when online.”
Seeking reassurance and support
Although there had been no recent incident, Arthur was aware that scams are becoming more sophisticated and wanted reassurance that he was taking the right steps to protect himself.
He first heard about the Safe Online service through communications from Hampshire Police and decided to arrange a visit to better understand how at risk he might be online
– Whether his current habits were safe
– What simple steps he could take to improve his security
“I have no concerns about asking for help… I would have done so before had it not been for inertia.”
What happens during a Safe Online visit
After a brief and straightforward phone call to arrange the appointment, a Blue Lamp Trust volunteer advisor visited Arthur at home.
The session was structured but relaxed, starting with an introduction to the Trust and the support available, followed by practical guidance using easy-to-understand materials.
“Efficient, friendly and professional.”
The advisor talked Arthur through key advice, including how to recognise scams, protect personal information, and improve everyday online habits.
“He suggested going through the subject matter first… many of my questions would be answered in the process – he was right.”
Building confidence through understanding
One of the most valuable aspects of the visit was helping Arthur understand why certain actions improve online safety – not just what to do.
Confidence, not just knowledge, plays a key role in staying safe online. Even when people are already doing the right things, uncertainty can make it harder to trust their own judgement.
“Whilst in many cases I was already doing the right thing, I often didn’t know why. Now I do – and greater understanding leads to greater confidence and peace of mind.”
He also learned practical tips such as:
– The importance of using longer passwords, and combining 3 random words
– How to recognise suspicious messages and avoid common scams – Simple ways to reduce risk when using devices and the internet
Feeling safer and more in control
Following the visit, Arthur felt significantly more confident navigating the online world.“I now feel much safer and more confident online.”
Importantly, the session reassured him that many of his existing habits were already good practice – giving him confidence as well as new knowledge.
Support that makes a real difference
Arthur described the Safe Online service as approachable, supportive, and reassuring –
particularly for those who may feel uncertain or anxious about technology.
“The Trust’s support is friendly, non-judgmental, undemanding of the client, and might save a lot of online anxiety in the future.”
He would strongly recommend the service to others in a similar position.
