Sometimes, it takes a whole community to make a house feel like a home again.
On Tuesday 6th October 2026, viewers across the country watched an incredible transformation unfold on BBC One, as DIY SOS: Ahmed and Rifat’s Fresh Start shared the story of a Southampton family whose home had been left unsafe and unfinished.
Filmed in October 2025, the project brought together an extraordinary group of volunteers, tradespeople and local businesses, all working towards one shared goal: giving a family a fresh start.
The Blue Lamp Trust was incredibly proud to be among those involved, with six members of our team joining the community effort to help bring this remarkable transformation to life.
A Fresh Start for a Southampton Family
Ahmed and Rifat Ali, a profoundly deaf couple from Bitterne, Southampton, had hoped to create a comfortable family home for themselves and their three children.
However, following building work that was left unfinished and subsequently deemed unsafe, the family found themselves facing an incredibly difficult situation.
With their home no longer meeting their family’s needs, the DIY SOS team stepped in to help.
Led by presenter Nick Knowles, the project brought together a dedicated community of volunteers to transform the property into a safe, welcoming and accessible home, carefully designed around the family’s needs.
The finished transformation was about far more than bricks and mortar. With accessibility, safety and the family’s individual needs at its heart, the project created a space where Ahmed, Rifat and their children could enjoy greater independence, comfort and peace of mind.
The Blue Lamp Trust Joins DIY SOS Southampton
In October 2025, six members of the Blue Lamp Trust team, including four of our Safety Technicians and two office colleagues, joined the DIY SOS build in Southampton.
From painting and decorating to tidying the site, moving supplies and helping with parking arrangements, our team got stuck into the practical jobs that helped keep such a busy project moving.
While our contribution was just one small part of a much larger effort, it was a fantastic opportunity to work alongside people who shared a common goal: helping a local family feel safe and comfortable in their home.
For our team, being part of something that would make such a meaningful difference was a wonderful experience.
The Power of Community Coming Together
One of the most inspiring aspects of DIY SOS is the extraordinary generosity of the people who make each transformation possible.
The Southampton project was no exception.
More than 150 tradespeople arrived on the first day of the build, bringing their skills, time and determination to help a family in need.
From skilled tradespeople and local businesses to volunteers working behind the scenes, every contribution played a part in bringing the project together.
After being involved in the build a year earlier, watching the finished transformation on BBC One in October 2026 was particularly special for our team.
Seeing the difference that so many people had made, and the family’s reaction to their new home, was a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when a community comes together.
Why Feeling Safe at Home Matters
At the Blue Lamp Trust, we understand how important it is for people to feel safe, secure and confident in their own homes.
Through our free Safe Home service, we support older and vulnerable residents across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, providing practical home safety and security advice, reassurance and appropriate safety equipment.
Although DIY SOS was very different from our usual day-to-day work, the project reflected something at the heart of our charity: everyone deserves to feel safe in the place they call home.
Being able to contribute to a project that offered a family renewed comfort, independence and peace of mind was something we were truly proud of.
A Heartfelt Thank You
We would like to extend a huge thank you to the entire DIY SOS team, the many volunteers, tradespeople, local businesses and organisations who contributed to this remarkable transformation.
Most importantly, we wish Ahmed, Rifat and their family every happiness as they enjoy their beautiful new home.
It was a privilege to be part of such a special project, and a wonderful reminder of the generosity and kindness within our local community.
